AIME was founded in 2005, rooted in the rich, continuous cultural heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Born from a vision to alleviate educational inequities in Australia, AIME (Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience) has since empowered over 25,000 Indigenous students and mobilised 10,000 university student mentors. By 2016, the program had proven its efficacy in Australia, creating a significant impact valued at $1.17 billion in net direct economic benefits.
After two years of running AIME I can honestly say that there is something in this Program that can make genuine change for young Indigenous people. I'm not afraid to say that and am happy to embrace the fact that this Program is destined to grow and with more hard work it is destined to succeed.
Jack Manning Bancroft, AIME Founder and CEO, 2012
In 2016, the AIME Board approved a $500,000 investment from its reserves to launch a global expansion, aiming to connect Indigenous communities worldwide with mentors and resources. This initiative sought to address global inequities by bringing Indigenous knowledge to the forefront of global problem-solving. Over the next two years, AIME's efforts culminated in the establishment of a robust global network, supported by 15 organisations and 10 universities, with their leaders endorsing AIME's mission through an open letter. By 2016, AIME had engaged 6,686 mentees, 2,255 mentors, 340 partner schools, and 18 university partners.
2018 - KPMG Economic Evaluation
2019 AIME High: A Social Entrepreneurs Moonshot, Harvard Business School, January
In 2018, KPMG conducted an economic evaluation of AIME's programs, underscoring their positive impact. The following year, Harvard Business School wrote "AIME High: A Social Entrepreneurs Moonshot". This period marked a shift to a volunteer-led model, making the program free for universities and schools, which led to a reduction in mentee numbers from 6,827 to 5,702. Despite this, AIME's vision to create a global stage for Indigenous youth remained strong, highlighted by the creation of the IMAGINATION DECLARATION at the Garma Festival. In 2019, AIME collaborated with 17 universities and 251 schools, engaging 5,702 mentees and 738 mentors.
The COVID-19 pandemic posed unprecedented challenges, but AIME swiftly transitioned to a digital delivery model, focusing on developing mentoring tools to extend its reach. In 2020, AIME supported 723 mentees and 44 mentors, while its resources were downloaded over 8,000 times by educators, indirectly impacting up to 275,709 students. The IMAGI-NATION{TV} platform recorded over 19,066 views, demonstrating the program's resilience and adaptability.
2021- IMAGI-NATION{TV} - Educational Impact Report
In 2021, AIME launched IMAGI-NATION{TV}, a digital platform aimed at fostering educational impact globally. The Australian government further supported AIME's global vision with a $500,000 investment announced by the Minister for Indigenous Australians, Ken Wyatt. This funding was pivotal in developing AIME's global relational network, connecting Indigenous communities with mentors worldwide. By the end of 2021, AIME's IMAGI-NATION project was set to create a virtual nation led by Indigenous systems knowledge, aiming to unite diverse networks to tackle global challenges.
“The work AIME does mentoring young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is invaluable. We’re proud to be investing $500,000 to support the development of their global relational network, to connect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with mentors around the world.
This is an exciting global vision and will create a range of new opportunities for our young people"
Hon Ken Wyatt AM, MP Minister for Indigenous Australians
As AIME moves towards its intentional closure in 2033, the focus is on the long-term impact of its freely distributed tools for classrooms, students, and network members in Australia and globally through IMAGI-NATION and aimementoring.com. These tools include the Mentor App, Mentorclass, IMAGINE Film, The Professors, 7 Down, gAIME of Life, and IMAGI-NATION{TV}, {Radio}, and {Cinema}. AIME is committed to assessing the projected impact of these tools, collaborating with partners to ensure their wide distribution and continued influence in educational institutions worldwide.
