Day 3: Dancing with Time
Some days feel like they exist outside of time. Today was one of them, spent with Uncle Noel and Aunty Trish Butler of the Yuin nation on Budawang country, where songlines run deep and stories rise from the earth like morning mist.
Uncle Noel carry time differently. Noel grew up trapping food and riding horses to school, preserving ancient knowledge while walking in two worlds. His eyes hold stories that books can't contain, and his generosity flows as naturally as the rivers that carved this land.
Our first lesson came in the form of a water tank - 28 of us moving as one organism, rolling this giant cylinder across 500 meters of earth. It wasn't just about moving something heavy; it was about finding rhythm together, about understanding how energy flows when hearts and hands align. The tank had been waiting months for this moment, teaching us that some things can't be rushed, that timing is everything.
As children played, we worked, learning that service isn't about grand gestures but about showing up, being present, doing what needs to be done. This is how knowledge has always been passed down - through doing, through being, through relationship with land and each other.
The smoking ceremony that followed wasn't a performance but a profound dialogue between people and place. Uncle Noel looked into each person's eyes - all 28 of us - with unwavering presence. Time stretched like honey, each moment full and golden. The last person received the same depth of welcome as the first, showing us how true ceremony works: no one is rushed, no one is less important, everyone belongs.
Then came our turn to share. The IMAGI-NATION performance burst into life - magic sparking off tradition, dance weaving through story, puppets speaking ancient truths in new tongues. Here, on this sacred ground where songlines run beneath our feet, we offered our own kind of ceremony. Indigenous wisdom met contemporary imagination, and something new was born in the space between.
Uncle Noel and Aunty Trish's work goes far beyond today. Through bush tucker walks, cultural tours, songs, and stories, they're helping birth an Australia where everyone can feel at home. They stand at the intersection of past and future, holding space for all of us to find our way back to connection.
As the day ended, we understood: this wasn't just about moving tanks or sharing performances. It was about moving hearts, about finding new ways to carry old wisdom, about learning to dance with time itself.
